Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Vobbl ("we", "us", "the App") collects, uses, stores, and shares information when you use the Vobbl mobile application.
Vobbl is operated for anglers primarily in the United States and Canada. By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Account Information
When you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive:
- Name
- Email address
- Profile picture (if provided by Google/Apple)
- A unique account identifier
1.2 Content You Create
- Catch logs: species, weight, length, date/time, photos, notes
- GPS coordinates of catch locations and saved spots
- Fishing trips, trip plans, and related notes
- Badges, achievements, and in-app activity
1.3 Location Data
Vobbl uses your device's GPS to automatically record where a catch was made and to show nearby spots on the map. Location access is requested at the operating-system level and can be denied or revoked at any time in your device settings; core logging features that don't depend on location will continue to work.
1.4 Device & Diagnostic Information
- Device type, operating system version, app version
- Crash logs, error stack traces, and basic diagnostic data (via Firebase Crashlytics), collected automatically when the App crashes or encounters an error, so we can find and fix bugs
- Screen views and general app-usage events (via Firebase Analytics, e.g. which screens are opened and whether your device is in portrait or landscape orientation) — not your catch data, photos, or account profile
1.5 Information We Do Not Collect
We do not collect payment card numbers (payments, if any, are handled by the App Store / Google Play billing systems, not by us), and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13 (see Section 7).
2. How We Use Information
We use the information above to:
- Provide core logbook functionality, including offline catch logging and sync
- Show your catches and spots on the map
- Award badges and track achievements
- Personalize weather, solunar, and species content for your location
- Maintain and improve app performance and reliability
- Communicate service-related notices (not marketing, unless you opt in)
3. How We Store and Protect Information
- Catch data is stored locally on your device (via Hive) so you can log a catch without a connection, and it is synced to our backend (Supabase, hosted on infrastructure in the United States/EU depending on project region) once a connection is available. Other app features (maps, weather, species content) require an internet connection.
- Data in transit is encrypted (HTTPS/TLS). Access to backend data is restricted by row-level security tied to your account.
- We retain your data for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion at any time (see Section 6).
4. Third-Party Services
Vobbl relies on the following third-party service providers, each of which processes a limited slice of data necessary to provide their service:
| Provider | Purpose | Data Shared |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Backend database, authentication, file storage | Account info, catch data, photos |
| Google Sign-In | Authentication | Name, email, profile picture |
| Apple Sign-In | Authentication | Name, email (or private relay email) |
| Mapbox | Maps, geocoding, bathymetry | Precise location, map interactions |
| Weather data provider(s) | Weather and solunar conditions | Catch location coordinates |
| Firebase Crashlytics (Google) | Crash and error reporting, to find and fix bugs | Crash logs, stack traces, device model, OS version, app version — not your catch data, photos, or account profile |
| Firebase Analytics (Google) | Understanding how the App is used, to improve features and reliability | Screen views, app-usage events, device model, OS version, app version — not your catch data, photos, or account profile |
| Google Gemini API | Automated content moderation and fish species identification for catch photos | Catch photos |
| Advertising network (e.g. Google AdMob) | Displaying in-app advertisements | Device identifiers, general (non-precise) location, app usage data, ad interaction data |
We do not sell your personal information. The App displays advertisements through third-party advertising networks (see table above), which may collect and use certain data (such as device identifiers and general location) for their own advertising purposes, including ad personalization where permitted and consented to. You can manage ad personalization preferences via the in-app consent screen and your device's ad settings.
5. Sharing With Other Users
Certain content — such as public catches, badges, or profile info — may be visible to other Vobbl users if you choose to share it, consistent with in-app privacy settings available to you. Private catches and spots are not shared with other users.
6. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your account and associated data
- Export your data
- Withdraw consent for location access at any time (device Settings)
To exercise these rights, contact us at the email in Section 9. We will respond within a reasonable time, consistent with applicable law (e.g. CCPA/CPRA for California residents, PIPEDA for Canadian residents).
6.1 California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
- Know what personal information we have collected, used, and disclosed about you in the preceding 12 months
- Delete personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain legal exceptions
- Correct inaccurate personal information
- Opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. You can exercise this choice via the in-app privacy/consent settings, or by emailing us at the address in Section 9 with "Do Not Share My Information" in the subject line
- Non-discrimination: we will not deny you service, charge you a different price, or provide a lower quality of service for exercising any of these rights
- Designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf
To exercise any of these rights, email us at the address in Section 9 with "California Privacy Request" in the subject line. We may need to verify your identity (e.g. by confirming account details) before processing certain requests.
7. Children's Privacy
Vobbl is not directed at children under 13 (or the relevant minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above, and, where required by law, we will provide additional notice.
